What It Took to Hang That Flag

The production numbers are legitimately unusual. More than 550 automated LED lights, 126,200 feet of wire, and a total power draw of approximately 2,250 amps. Two 40-ton cranes. Thirty riggers. Five overnight installation shifts running 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. so the dam‘s daytime visitor traffic wasn’t disrupted.

The flag itself required five days of sewing preparation before it ever left the ground. It has 3,000 linear feet of quadruple-sewn webbing, 40,000 linear feet of thread, and 220 welded D-rings — all because a 2,000-pound flag hanging in a high-wind canyon needs to be engineered, not just sewn. The rigging system was custom-fabricated specifically for this site and built to handle six weeks of continuous operation, including the ability to raise and lower the flag when weather requires. The only previous time a flag was draped over Hoover Dam was for one hour in 1996 during the Olympic Torch Relay.

The Dam, by the Numbers

Hoover Dam went up fast for what it was: construction ran from April 1931 to March 1936, five years for a 726-foot structure spanning 1,244 feet. More than 21,000 men worked on it over that period, with a daily average of around 3,500 workers on site. It used over 3.25 million cubic yards of concrete. The dam‘s surface area exceeds 400,000 square feet.

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo and Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs both spoke at Monday’s ceremony, alongside Clark County Commissioner Jim Gibson, Bureau of Reclamation Acting Regional Director Genevieve Johnson, and LVCVA President and CEO Steve Hill. Lombardo framed it as part of Nevada‘s broader narrative going into the 250th, pointing to the dam, the state’s tech sector, and its tourism industry as connected chapters in American history.

The Summer Fireworks Schedule

Eight consecutive Saturdays on the Strip and Downtown Las Vegas, running through late June and into July. The LVCVA's summer programming page at visitlasvegas.com has the full schedule.

The light display at the dam runs nightly through July 4, weather permitting. Hoover Dam visitor hours and tour information are on the Bureau of Reclamation‘s site. The drive from the Strip takes roughly 35 to 45 minutes — Boulder Highway out through Henderson is the most direct route. Go in the evening if you want to see the illumination; the flag is visible from the observation areas.

The installation is also tied to America250’s "Great American Road Trip" initiative, encouraging visits to iconic U. S. destinations ahead of the anniversary.
